The US Food and Drug Administration approved Nexium, a prescription-only medicine for the treatment of malaria.
The drug, a combination of the anti-malarial prodrug antimalarial N, N-dimethyl-5-oxo-N-benzyl-N-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-4-piperidine-3,5-dione, is a highly effective and inexpensive treatment for malaria, a problem that is becoming harder to solve for AstraZeneca.
AstraZeneca, the US-based drug maker, is the world’s largest manufacturer of the drug and the world’s second largest drug maker.
The US pharmaceutical company has agreed to pay $200m to the US government to help AstraZeneca in the trial and to pay the rest of the $2.5bn in rebates AstraZeneca had received from the US government.
“Our partnership with AstraZeneca is vital to ensuring that the US government continues to support the successful development of this potentially lifesaving medication for malaria,” AstraZeneca spokesman Tim Anderson said.
