Men who have taken esomeprazole have said the same thing: more than half of those who take it have suffered heart attacks and strokes.
A study published Tuesday in the journalJAMA Network Opensuggests that those who take the drug for heart disease may suffer some form of gastrointestinal side-effects.
The study, which was led by researchers from the University of Cincinnati and the University of Florida, compared the heart health of participants taking a combination of esomeprazole (the active ingredient in Nexium) and omeprazole (the ingredient in Prilosec). Both drugs have been shown to have a similar effect, but the results were inconsistent.
Esomeprazole and omeprazole are often prescribed to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcers, respectively.
But the researchers said the results were interesting enough to suggest that people taking the drugs may suffer some form of gastrointestinal side-effects, and may need to avoid the drugs altogether.
“This is an interesting finding that is important because it shows that even though people who take omeprazole and esomeprazole may suffer gastrointestinal side-effects, they do have a slightly lower incidence of these effects,” said study co-leader David Goldfarb, MD, a professor of surgery at the University of Miami and a co-author of the study.
Dr. Goldfarb said he had hoped that the findings would help to raise awareness about the potential side-effects of drugs.
“We need to make sure that people who are taking them are aware that they are also taking other drugs that may interact with omeprazole and esomeprazole,” he said.
The drug omeprazole may also interact with other drugs, such as rilpivirine, a prescription medicine used to treat COVID-19, the study authors said.
Researchers at University of Florida and Mayo Clinic said they did not see any difference in heart rates between the two drugs.
Goldfarb said he hoped the findings would help to raise awareness about the potential side-effects of drugs.
